Efficient delivery of monitoring data in networked fishing boats

This paper describes a novel comprehensive framework for transporting data over mobile ad hoc networks supporting seamen of fishing boats. Data representing boat status, urgent signals, announcement, etc are generated and delivered to the monitoring stations within a predefined time interval. We design a cross-layer architecture respecting both time constraint on data delivery and communication efficiency. Sending and deliberate retransmissions of a packet from the source node is made in synchronization with the path status. Boat electronics relaying data are proposed to reserve a small cache to enable smart selection and forwarding. Extensive simulation results clearly demonstrate the benefits of the proposed scheme with respect to data reliability, latency, and overhead.
