Time effects in the design of wood structures : A review

Time effects, considering both creep and load-duration effects, have been and continue to be a concern in the design of wood structures. Recent research has produced new data and behavior models for both creep and creep-rupture of structural woods members and systems. Additionally, the current shift in the design community from an allowable stress design (ASD) format to a load and resistance factor design (LRFD) format has prompted further study of time effects in wood. In this paper, a review of recent research in the area of time-dependent behavior of structural wood will be presented with specific reference to design. Consideration will be given to current ASD procedures, as well as proposed LRFD procedures. Recommendations for future research are made concerning times effects in the design of wood structures.
