Miniaturized V-shaped wideband antenna for UHF operation

A novel compact broadband V-shaped monopole antenna for UHF application is presented in this paper. The antenna evolves from the principles of bended L monopole and meander antenna. With the introduction of a shorting strip, the size of the antenna is just 48.7mm×40mm×60mm (about 0.14λ × 0.12λ × 0.17λ, λ is the wavelength relative to the lower edge frequency 880MHz). It covers GSM-900 (Global System for Mobile Communications), DCS-1800 (Digital Communication System), PCS-1900 (Personal Communications Service) and UMTS-2100 (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems) bands, ranging from 880MHz to 2220MHz within 2:1 VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio). The simulated and measured impedance bandwidth is 87% and 86% respectively, shown good agreement. Handcraft fabrication errors account for the slightly discrepancy.
