Potential applications of FT-Raman spectroscopy for dermatological diagnostics

Abstract Raman spectra have been obtained from normal, healthy human stratum corneum, callus tissue and hyperkeratotic psoriatic plaques. Assignments of the spectra have been made and changes in the 1000–1500 and 2800–3100 cm−1 wavenumber regions have been related to lipid loss in the abnormal tissues but the keratin component is structurally unaltered. The potential of the FT-Raman spectroscopic technique for diagnosis of hyperkeratotic conditions in human tissue is assessed.
