Energy absorption of an initially imperfect strut subjected to an impact load

Abstract In previous papers [ Int. J. Impact Engng 3 , 155–165 (1985); Structural Crashworthiness , pp. 44–65. Butterworths London (1983)] the authors presented an effective method for predicting the static behaviour of a simple mild steel strut undergoing gross deformation. It was shown how this method could determine the amount of energy the structure absorbs and, by regulating the amount of initial imperfection, control the maximum force and deceleration of an impacting mass. However, when dealing with impact loads the strut's behaviour is complicated by various dynamic effects rendering this simple approach inaccurate. In this paper some of these effects are analyzed and a modified solution proposed.
