Hybrid modulation scheme for Visible Light Communication using CMOS camera

Abstract Complementary-Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor (CMOS) camera based visible light communication (VLC) technology has been widely studied due to its high robustness and easy promotion. The data transmission rate is one of the most challenges for the camera based VLC system. In this work, a novel hybrid modulation scheme including Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), Pulse Position Modulation (PPM), and Discrete Pulse Amplitude Modulation (DPAM) is proposed. The PWM and PPM are used to increase the data transmission rate of the system while the DPAM is aimed to achieve the dimming function. Experiments show that the proposed scheme can achieve 10.47kb/s data rate per image frame. The proposed modulation scheme not only greatly improves the data rate, but also realizes the dimming function, which satisfies the requirement of the IEEE 802.15.7 VLC Task Group standard.
