Three-Dimensional Treatment Planning for Fast Neutrons

Based on differences in the energy deposition in biological matter, fast neutrons show a benefit for the radiotherapy of several tumors compared to photons [1]. The use of neutrons in radiotherapy involves treatment planning of at least the same quality as that for photons. The Mevaplan (Siemens) treatment planning system was adapted for the simulation of neutron dose distributions. The multiplanar reconstruction option of the system enables the coplanar calculation of three-dimensional dose distributions. The statistical evaluation is useful for discussing and comparing the different treatment plans. To improve the visualization of the treatment plans the topographic and dosimetric data were evaluated by the volume visualization system Voxel-Man. The treatment plans can be displayed in different types of views using the full spectrum of available rendering methods.
