Transient simulation of lightning strokes on HVDC transmission lines and fault pole selection

The length of HVDC overhead transmission lines is generally hundreds or even thousands of kilometers, across a variety of complex terrains. It is easily for HVDC transmission lines to be struck by lightning. Statistics showed that lightning stroke was a major cause for flashovers on HVDC transmission lines. Transient simulation and analysis of lightning strokes play important roles for lightning protection design and protection configuration of HVDC transmission lines. Based on research of lightning transient simulation methods, this paper built a lightning transient simulation model of a ±660kV DC transmission project, using the PSCAD program. The influence of amplitude of lightning current on the insulation of HVDC transmission lines and the transient process of voltages and currents on DC transmission lines after a lightning stroke are analyzed. In order to avoid maloperation of HVDC transmission line protection on the non-fault pole, a single ended fault pole selection criterion based on integrals of voltage fault components is proposed.
