Supplementary sensorimotor area

This text provides insights into recent clinical research in the supplementary sensorimotor area (SSMA). The book opens with an historical overview and follows with a discussion of recent experimental animal studies in the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry of the SSMA. Among the topics explored in this section are microstimulation mapping of the SSMA in relation to cortical architectronics and other cortical motor areas, corticospinal and corticostriatal efferents of the SSMA in relation to other cortical motor areas, evolutionary and comparative neurobiology of the SSMA among primates, laterality and hemispheric specialization of the SSMA, physiological contrasts and similarities between the SSMA and other cortical motor areas, and the functions of the SSMA in monkeys and humans.
