The friction of diamond

Abstract The friction of diamond on diamond can be influenced by atmosphere, load, slider sharpness, the crystal orientations of the two diamonds, surface preparation, and repeated sliding over the same path. Experimental measurements showing some effects of repeated sliding are reported here. Tabor's analysis of diamond friction as due to a Coulomb term combined with an adhesion term is extended to the case where sliding is not along principal slopes of the asperities. The anisotropy in friction can be explained as due to variations in the total sideways excursion of asperities on the sliding surfaces, as these asperities ride over and around each other.
