ARS: an adaptive reception scheme for handheld devices supporting mobile video streaming services

Streaming video to mobile hand-held devices is expected to be one of the killer applications for the future wireless networks. However, this is a very challenging task because wireless channels are unreliable and the channel bandwidth varies with time, which may result in severe degradation to video quality. In this paper, we propose a layered video broadcasting architecture and develop an adaptive reception scheme for handheld devices to support mobile video streaming services over heterogeneous wireless networks. Our trace-based simulation results show that the proposed reception scheme can efficiently utilize the available bandwidth for mobile handheld devices and, hence, maximize the perceptual quality of received video streams
