STUDIES ON THE POPULATION BIOLOGY OF THE GENUS VIOLA. II. THE EFFECT OF PLANT SIZE ON FITNESS IN VIOLA SORORIA

Populations of plants are generally formed by individuals of different sizes. Studies with monocultures at different densities (Kira et al., 1953; Yoda et al., 1963; White and Harper, 1970) indicate that populations converge in time towards a similar biomass per unit area, provided density is high enough for competition for resources to be taking place. This means that average individual plant dry weight and average size change with density in a predictable way. The relationship can be expressed mathematically as follows:
