Chapter 6 – Implementation

Publisher Summary This chapter explains the implementation efforts that have been made to date in introducing biomass energy systems. Among the various energy alternatives, renewable as well as non-renewable, the modification and extension of the use of biomass energy has many advantages. A wide variety of biomass options are available that appear technically feasible. Many also have the potential of yielding related benefits, such as environmental improvement, and alleviation of the economic and physical hardships that are often characteristic features of present energy supply methods, beyond their simple impact on energy supply; . The chapter discusses some of the inherent features within developing countries at the micro level as well as at higher levels that influence the acceptance and rate of adoption of new energy systems, and presents constraints on the immediate impact of biomass techniques. It describes the general features of developing countries that are relevant to implementation of biomass energy schemes. To assess the true feasibility of biomass energy in the short-term and to identify the key requirements for effective implementation in the future, it is vital to understand the realities of the social, economic, and political system in developing countries.
