The increasing tendency of the number of hospitals reporting to the Hospital Infection Surveillance System of the State of Sao Paulo, also registered in previous years, has been maintained in 2008. This tendency ensues the collection of consistent data allowing comparison among the hospitals and the direction of preventive actions for the control of hospital infections (IH). This increase in adherence is the result of actions performed by the Hospital Infections Division of the Epidemiologic Surveillance Center (CVE/CCD/SES/-SP) of the Disease Control Coordination of the State Secretary of Health of Sao Paulo, in a partnership with the regional Epidemiologic Surveillance Groups (GVE) and the municipalities. Consolidation of this system allows us to go further in the implantation of new IH indicators that will result in more detailed analysis of the behavior of IH in the State.
