A Methodology for Two-Way Coordination of Pre-timed Traffic Signals

This paper discusses how the rapid urbanization and industrialization of urban areas around the world, especially in India, have dramatically increased the number of vehicles on the road and increased traffic congestion. This increase in traffic congestion has increased traffic delays, energy consumption, environmental pollution and vehicle operating costs (VOC). This paper develops a methodology for two-way coordination of pre-timed signals for 3, 4, and 5 arm intersections that takes into account factors for signal settings. The methodology attempts to gain information on green time and phase sequence based on key factors such as space-mean speed and link distanced between two intersections. In order to solve the two-way traffic signal coordination problem, a phase sequence is altered.
