MOBILITY AND THE INDIVIDUAL IN WESTERN INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY. IN: THE AUTOMOBILE

One of the most significant transport development in the western world since World War II has been the growth in private vehicle ownership, especially automobiles. This paper's goal is to discuss the nature and measurement of mobility, as seen from the perspective of an individual. Reviewed are some quantitative measures that define mobility or the consequences of mobility. The paper outlines an activity-based framework within which many of the aspects can be related, and discusses its strengths and weaknesses. Conclusions are drawn from the work that has been reviewed.
