Simulation of Spiral Turbulence

Results of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are presented for the TaylorCouette system with counter-rotating cylinders at a radius ratio 0.89. The o w exhibits a pattern of banded alternating laminar and turbulent regions spiraling around the cylinder. We demonstrate that the turbulent spiral is composed of numerous small-scale azimuthallyelongated vortices, while the laminar region is essentially vortex-free.
