On the lmpact of Burst Errors on Wire less A TM

In recent years thcrc has bcen an emerging interest in using ATM for wireless transmissions. Becausc ATM is primarily designed for an essentially error-free environment, in thc wireless context thc soiirccs of errors and their consequences must he thoroughly undcrstood. While this concern is valid in any nehvork, it takes on a new, more central role in the wirclcss environmcnt, whcrc crror bursts ar expectcd to he a very significant sourcc of degradation. In this articlc we examine the impact or burst errors on the direct transfcr of ATM cells ovcr a wireless channel, taking into account the cell framing format as well as thc ccll delineation and synchronization mechanism. We also investigatc thc cnnsequences of interleaving. We find that fragmcnting thc data in cells could result in a much highcr error rate as seen by the higher laycrs relative to the bit crror rate on the raw channel. We assess the adcqnacy of HEC-hascd cell dclincation and dcduce the most appsopriatc values of the paramctcrs of the cell delincation algorithm for the wireless channel,
