Two key support tools for environmentally friendly process optimal synthesis

One vital task of chemical process design with sustainability considerations is to reduce or eliminate the negative impacts on the human health and the environment. This work focuses on improving process design and development for environment by utilizing two support tools, a tool for process environmental performance assessment, and one for multiobjective optimization technology. This paper presents a method for integrated environmental performance assessment by means of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). An integrated environmental index (IEI) is proposed as the environmental performance comparison metric. This paper also presents a posteriori method for multiobjective problem solving, which combined elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA- II) and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS).
