LXXXVII Ototoxic Hearing Loss and Cochlear Pathology in the Monkey

The specific toxicity of streptomycin and other aminoglycosidic antibiotics for the inner ear is well recognized, but by no means fully understood. Although an abundant literature records many cases of impaired hearing in patients as a result of therapy with these antibiotics, and innumerable examples of destructive changes produced in the organ of Corti of experimental animals, there have been few opportunities for direct correlation of audiometric measurements and cochlear histopathology in the same individuals. Occasionally, audiograms and temporal bone pathology have been compared in clinical cases of ototoxic hearing loss which came to autopsy.l-" The only similar experimental study is that of the ototoxicity of streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin in trained cats by McGee and Olszewski," who measured auditory thresholds by an avoidance-conditioning procedure (using negative reinforcement with electric shocks) and studied both the temporal bones and the brainstem post mortem
