Abstract The development of thick-walled super-tough X-65 and X-70 transmission pipe has proceeded apace during the past three years in response to demands created by the discovery and proposed exploitation of oil and gas reserves in remote parts of the globe. Development trends in North America, Europe and Japan are reviewed from the standpoint of their metallurgical significance. Similarities and differences in the various materials solutions are emphasised.
