Abstract A finite-time thermodynamic analysis is given of the thermionic engine as a direct converter of heat to electricity. The engine is coupled to a radiant solar input and is radiatively coupled to a heat sink. Both the heat source and heat sink are assumed to have infinite heat-capacity rates. The characteristics of the engine are determined when it is operating at maximum power.
