Initial Position Detection of PMSM

The paper deals with an initial and low speed rotor position estimation of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). A high frequency (hf) signal injection is used to excite the position dependent motor saliencies. Tracking those saliencies lead to the information about the rotor position. Proposed algorithm represents tracking observer returning the rotor flux position. Moreover, it compensates the estimation error due to the permanent magnet polarity misalignment. Thanks to this, Initial Position Detection (IPD) can be used as an enhancement when relative position sensor or an open loop start-up is used, or as stand-alone sensorless control approach for low speed region. Issues and limitations of mechanical alignment were analyzed and evaluated based on measurements. The IPD algorithm is intended to be an alternative to this common alignment method.
