Environmental and socioeconomic study of the production of biodiesel oil of Cyperus esculentus.

Abstract Biodiesel is considered an alternative to fossil fuels, but the crop most used in the production of this biofuel is soy, that is inserted into the human food chain, so there is no need to study alternative raw materials. The weed Cyperus esculentus can become an alternative for the production of biodiesel, but this requires an extensive study related to environmental, economic and social. The objective of this research is to perform a study of the economic, environmental and social viability of the production of biodiesel obtained from the transesterified Cyperus esculentus oil. The socioenvironmental and economic cost-benefit analysis (CBA) was performed in order to obtain data related to social and economic factors. The production of biodiesel from the oil seed Cyperus esculentus is economically viable. It contributes to the family farm, minimizes environmental impacts related to pesticide use and the required cultivation area is lower the cultivated area is smaller with the same performance, compared to the soybean.
