Tagging learning objects in Moodle for personalisation and re-use

Bateman et al (2007) state that tagging is largely unemployed in elearning systems. Common e-learning platforms (for example Moodle) offer course and learner management tools, however, previous research has found that they offer little in the way of enabling the author to tag learning resources or objects for personalisation and re-use. This paper describes current e-learning platforms, evaluation research and research into the use of tagging to describe learning objects within e-learning systems. It then continues to describe a model for tagging learning objects for personalization and re-use. The model described allows for tagging learning objects according to their subject domain, topic, knowledge level and also by learning style representation. This model has been implemented in Moodle and a description of how this implementation was undertaken is given.
