Multi-mode FDTD simulations of indoor propagation including antenna properties

Two dimensional finite difference timed domain (FDTD) methods have previously been used for indoor propagation calculations. The paper presents an extension to permit 2 1/2 dimensional multi-mode simulations obtained by separation of the 3D YEE-FDTD-scheme. One of the benefits of this technique is its capability to take into account properties of arbitrary antennas. The method itself is derived and the underlying antenna model is explained. Results are presented and compared to those of measurements. The influence of antenna properties (such wire length and thickness of a dipole antenna) on the channel impulse response is shown in some practical simulation examples.
