Abstract This paper presents a study coming from an academic and industry partnership with the goals of exploring potential uses for UAS in distribution system operation and maintenance, establishing baseline costs and capabilities via equipment field tests, and simulating the cost benefits of increased maintenance. Existing UAS technology is shown to be capable of providing situational awareness for disaster response as well as increasing the number of maintenance inspections and speeding them up.
