On man-computer dialogues with alpha-numeric status displays for Naval command systems

This paper presents models for the discussion of man-computer dialogues within future Naval command systems, and some definitions associated with them. The nature of the users' communication within and between Naval command systems is discussed, also the similarities between man-computer dialogues and man-man dialogues. The transaction of linguistic information between the user, equipment and environment via alpha-numeric displays (TOTEs) is described. Particular attention is paid to the need for user-centred job designs, and examples of approaches to be taken during job design are given. Design ground rules for alpha-numeric status display formats and their associated man-computer dialogue are given along with suggestions concerning their implementation. Finally, there is some discussion on how particular ground rules might be applied in a number of hypothetical cases.
