ANALYSIS OF PRIVATE DRIVERS' COMMUTING BEHAVIOR AND COMMERCIAL DRIVERS' WORK-RELATED BEHAVIOR

This paper presents an analysis of private and commercial drivers' information requirements for an advanced traveler information system (ATIS). The analysis is based on data from two nationwide surveys that addressed private drivers' needs and commercials drivers' needs. Factors that were looked at included: trip safety, trip time, trip distance, and trip enjoyment. Cluster analysis techniques were used to separate drivers into distinct subgroups based on their commute and work-related trip priorities. A multinomial logit analysis of the differences among the drivers is presented. The paper concludes with a discussion of the ways these finds should help system designers select options to be made available for ATIS.
