COGNITIVE ENGINEERING: DESIGNIING FOR SITUATION AWARENESS. IN: COGNITIVE ENGINEERING IN THE AVIATION DOMAIN

Situation awareness refers to the adaptation between a pilot and his work environment. This paper uses the construct of situation awareness as an introduction to the field of cognitive engineering. It examines the issue of situations to determine what are the best ways to represent a situation so that designers can fully appreciate the cognitive and performance requirements that must be satisfied for successful adaptation. The issue of awareness is also addressed, with the ability, capacity, and predilections of the cognitive agents coming into consideration. Additionally, the process of analyzing distributed cognitive systems is discussed.
