Optimal gain for proportional-integral-derivative feedback

A design method to find the best tuning parameters for a proportional-integral-derivative controller is presented. The procedure uses a time-domain optimization technique to minimize the integral-squared-error response to a step input. The proposed method is evaluated for three representative examples, which show significant improvement when compared to more approximate methods.
