A load distribution theory for bridge slabs allowing for the effect of Poisson's ratio

Summary A load distribution theory for bridge slabs in which account is taken of the effect of Poisson's ratio is presented. The effect of the value of Poisson's ratio on the theoretical distribution factors for de flexions and longitudinal bending moments is discussed. In the case of the transverse bending moments a series of curves for the distribution coefficient, μ, have been prepared from which accurate assessments of the moments can be made allowing for a Poisson's ratio of 0·15, i.e. for materials such as reinforced and prestressed concrete.
