Abstract Microstructures applied on technical surfaces can lead to a significant improvement of the function of a workpiece. Most of the technical surfaces are preliminary processed, e.g. grinded, before applying the microstructure. Regarding the quality assuran ce, the grinding grooves on the surface can be a barrier when it comes to automatically detect the microstructure and afterwards calculate function oriented quality indicators. Therefore a three-stage noise suppression methodology is presented in this paper using the single point analysis, the Sobel algorithm and the Hough transformation to automatically detect the accurate form of the microstructure in order to enable the subsequent calculation of function orientated quality indicators. These quality indicators can be used to automatically adjust the parameters of the production machine while it is operating.
