Low-Cost Wireless System for Agrochemical Dosage Reduction in Precision Farming

The pesticide dosage reduction is addressed by means of an innovative combination of the wireless sensor network technology and the fuzzy logic theory. The proposed solution introduces the estimation of the spatial distribution of the optimal dosage thanks to the pervasive feature of the wireless architecture. The fuzzy logic rules imitate the human reasoning through the simple modeling of the farmers' best practices. The proposed solution has been experimentally tested in a vineyard in the north of Italy for the treatment of the downy mildew infection. A 47% of pesticide reduction has been obtained during a three-months measurement campaign.
