Mechanical impedance of a piano soundboard

An experimental study of the mechanical impedance Z of a piano soundboard in the frequency range ∼50–104 Hz is reported. The results differ significantly from the behavior reported by Wogram above a few kHz, but are consistent with the measurements of Conklin. The data presented here are also in good agreement with the predictions of our recent numerical calculations. Those calculations found that the soundboard ribs have an important effect on the frequency dependence of Z above a few kHz, and our measurements confirm that prediction.
