Regional heterogeneity of bacteria and their glycosidase activities across and along the colonic segments of rats

Numbers of Bacteroidaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and staphylococci were higher in the periphery of the colonic contents of rats than in the core. Numbers of total anaerobic bacteria, lactobacilli and enterococci did not differ among these regions. Activities of glycosidases were higher in the periphery than in the core.
