Intelligent algorithms for system capacity optimization of UMTS FDD networks

The problem of choosing the optimum settings for antenna tilt and common pilot channel power of the base stations in an UMTS radio network is considered. In this paper, we present two optimization algorithms for finding the best settings of these parameters. First, we apply a rule-based approach. Second, we subsequently extend this by incorporating simulated annealing. The optimization techniques are evaluated both with a virtual scenario of a European city and with a reference scenario from a commercial planning tool vendor. In the first scenario we show an increase in capacity of about 50 percent. For the scenario of the planning tool vendor we achieve a capacity increase of 25 percent. In the direct comparison of the two algorithms simulated annealing gives better results.
