Energy Storage for the Next Generation of Robotic Space Exploration

Energy storage technologies play an important role in powering the robotic exploration of space. Batteries can serve as either the primary power source for a mission, or augment power produced by solar arrays or radioisotope thermoelectric generators. Primary batteries have been used to power atmospheric and landed probes, with rechargeable batteries used to provide power to various spacecraft types during launches, to support peak power/load levelling needs, and to provide power during eclipse periods. Further advances in aerospace energy storage technologies are needed, in particular with respect to improving battery safety and reliability, specific energy, and extreme environment capabilities.
