Study on the ultrasonic Cutting (1st Report)

This report is described an outline of the ultrasonic two dimensional cutting that is operated by using the uibrated bite is fixed on the horn of the ultrasonic machine. The frequency is 18.4 KC constant, amplitude variable and the workpiece is used the aluminum, brass, mild steel and cast iron. The results are as follows : 1) At first, it was found that the direction of a vibration must set to the cutting direction and the cutting effects are obtained by this effective impluse farce with out the bite damaging trouble etc.2) The mean cutting resistance was very small and a build up edge dia not observed, so the machined surface was very smooth.3) On the alminum cutting, the cutting ratio is nearly equal 1, the chips tensile strength is equal of the workpiece and the shearing stress at the shear zone is zero.4) The flow type chip of the cast iron is observed.
