STIR-BAR ADSORPTIVE EXTRACTION ON A POLY(TETRAFLUOROETHYLENE) COATED STIR-BAR: PRELIMINARY EVALUATION USING PHENANTHRENE

ABSTRACT Using phenanthrene as a model analyte, we show that extraction from aqueous solution is possible via adsorption onto the surface of a poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-coated magnetic stir bar. Desorption from the stir-bar via ultrasonic agitation in acetonitrile solution allows quantitation of the analyte in solution. The technique is presented as a simple strategy, using commonly available laboratory apparatus, for the extraction of analytes from solution based on a surface adsorption processes: stir-bar adsorptive extraction (SBAE).
