Current Status of Forest Carbon Sinks in Guizhou Province and Their Increasing Potential

Forest carbon estimates in regional levels benefit forest management aiming of overall level carbon fixation and increase. They can be used to evaluate the contributions of forest carbon in reducing regional carbon emissions.Based on the estimate method of greenhouse gases inventory,we estimated forest carbon sinks in Guizhou Province at year 2000,2005 and 2010,respectively.Results show that, forest carbon in Guizhou increased to 22.4(in year 2005) and 24.3(year 2010) from,15.4 million t CO2(year 2000),implying a stable growth trend. These forest cabon account for 6.73%~10.35% of the total provincial carbon emissions. There are 1.617 million hectors suitable land for forest in Guizhou. If these lands could be used to develop carbon forestry, they could absorb 2.379 million t CO2 every year,in total 71.37 million t in future 30 years.Guizhou Province is in a stage of carbon emission growth;it therefore has a very hard way to reduce carbon emission concerning the forest carbon sink. The potential ability of increasing forest carbon sink is significantly strong in this area.
