Hierarchical multi-stable shapes in mechanical memory metal

The mechanism by which novel dimpled metallic sheets adopt multi-stable cylindrical modes is determined using a straightforward homogenization scheme, which identifies highly compliant narrow regions linked to the unit cell geometry of dimple layout. The sheet prefers to bend about these regions to maximize the curving induced by residual stresses.
