Evaluation of the JP-8+100 additive candidates in the extended duration thermal stability test system

The United States Air Force embarked on a program in 1989 to improve the thermal stability of JP-8. Identifying and developing thermal stability improving additives packages that could be added to the JP-8 kerosene fuel was the selected approach for this program. Current research indicates the additive package will contain three main ingredients : antioxidants, metal deactivator and detergents/dispersants. Three additive packages have been identified as the most promising candidates for further evaluation. Testing of the individual additives of one of these packages was conducted to determine their contribution to the thermal stability improvement. This paper covers the evaluation of the individual additives in the Extended Duration Thermal Stability Test (EDTST).
