Using Classification in Case-Based Planning

This paper presents a classification-based approach to case-based reasoning. This approach has been implemented i n the RESYN/CBR system whose goal is to build synthesis plans for organic molecules reusing memorised plans. Planning relies on two c lassification processes: ordinary or strong classification to retr ieve a similar planning problem and smooth classification when the former f ails. Smooth classification is an original mechanism that can beco m f general use in case-based reasoning. The two classification processes as well as adaptation are discussed in this paper from a gener al and applicative point of view.
