Cell loss reduction by cell unit interleaving in wireless ATM networks

This paper proposes a method of reducing cell loss probabilities by interleaving header and data bits in wireless ATM networks where bit errors are likely to occur in bursts. The proposed method is easily applicable to the BISDN physical layer protocol with a negligibly small processing delay. An analytic modeling of the proposed method and a subsequent calculation show a substantial improvement in cell loss probability due to burst errors, which has been also verified by computer simulation. This paper also proposes a technique of applying the interleaving method to PDH, SDH, and the cell-based physical layer protocols.
