Local-aware H.323-based VoIP service in EPON

Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) transmits voice communication in the packet-based switching network that requires packets to be delivered in a steady timing and with low latency, jitter, packet loss and sufficient bandwidth. Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is one of the best future-oriented next-generation access network technologies, which can use the strict dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) to enhance bandwidth distribution. In this paper, the OLT built a VoIP server to implement a fully functioning VoIP telephony system is proposed for handling all the telephony services for users; and a new VoIP architecture with a new component between the OLT and ONU over the enhanced EPON is also proposed. The component between the OLT and the ONU is the 3:N star coupler with an optical isolator. The Star coupler in the architecture is going to support the intra-traffic redirection communication among ONUs. ONU will accord the LLID to decide whether receive the packet or not. The “Redirect DBA” mechanism is proposed, which can support traffic localization between ONUs. Simulation results have shown that our proposed architecture can improve the QoS in terms of mean packet delay, jitter, the system throughput, and the packet loss.
