Geostatistical Ore-reserve Estimation

The basic theory behind geostatistical methods will be presented in this chapter in such a way as to minimize the use of mathematical expressions and notations. The intention is to give the mining geologist and engineer sufficient theory to be able to apply geostatistics in an intelligent and informed way. Considerable attention is thus given to the production and modelling of the semi-variogram, the basic tool of the geostatistician. This aspect is frequently underplayed which is a pity, for the whole process is totally dependent on the interpretation of the semivariogram. The various stages of a geostatistical ore-reserve estimation procedure are explained, leading to the production of block (local) reserves and overall (global) reserves. The final stage of the whole exercise is the construction of a grade—tonnage curve.
