Saccades to step-ramp stimuli

Abstract Subjects were required to track horizontal step-ramp stimuli in which, with a fixed step size, ramp speed was randomly selected among seven alternatives. Saccadic eye movements were analysed in detail to determine if they were “predictive” i.e. were calculated on the basis of the velocity of the target and/or the pursuit movements of the eyes that occurred prior to the saccades' onset. No evidence supporting such specific prediction was found; different strategies seemed to be adopted by the different subjects. Saccades appeared to be based principally upon a position error sampled at some moment late in the latency period.
