Progress of Studies Abroad on Development and Transition of Resource-based Cities

The development of resource-based cities is a common problem all over the world,while the sustained and sound development of resource-based cities has become one of the most prominent issues in China.In order to learn from theoretical studies and practical experiences of studies abroad on resource-based cities,this study comprehensively summarizes the researches on resource-based cities in the west,referring to the literatures which were cited frequently,and other related studies published recently.And the result shows the research process abroad could be divided into four stages,namely initial stage,improvement and development stage,transition-focus stage and stage focusing on sustainable development,and each stage holds special features in term of research context,research contents,theoretical basis,research focus,and so on.Then an analysis is carried out to compare briefly related researches in China and other foreign countries,which demonstrate there are differences and connections in terms of the definition of main concept,urban characteristics,relationships between mining companies and cities,as well as means,tradition and priorities for corresponding studies.At last,some suggestions are concluded to improve the domestic studies,aiming to construct study methods and theoretical frameworks,which meet the need arising from national conditions,and more specifically,the characteristics of resource-based cities in China.
