THE DSM-CC OBJECT CAROUSEL FOR PM 13.2 BROADCAST DATA SERVICES

The DSM-CC (Digital Storage Media Control and Command) is a new MPEG standard (IS0 13818-6) which includes specifications for a data carousel called the User-to-User (U-U) Object Carousel. The U-U Object carousel operates in a broadcast network and is designed to be compatible with the Object Request Broker (ORB) framework as defined by the Common Object Request Broker Architecture consortium. The various protocol layers including encapsulation within MPEG-2 Transport Streams are discussed to describe how objects such as data files or directories are transmitted in the carousel. It is also shown how client applications can identify objects in the carousel and how network independence is achieved. Finally, it is shown that the DSM-CC Object Carousel is a flexible framework which can be adapted to various application profiles such as the ones drafted by the ATSC Working Group on Data Broadcast Services (T3S13).
